Aimed at business professionals in small-to-medium
size companies who frequently need to transfer
large files to colleagues, Memeo Send offers an
easily monitored alternative to other file-sharing
means. Requiring less knowledge than FTP sharing
and zipping, and more consistent follow-up than
e-mail, it's an attractive way for employees to
literally keep an eye on what's shared.
Cross-platform Windows and Mac support, secure
transfers, and limitless size restrictions also
sweeten the deal, at least in theory.
Reality comes close behind. Memeo Send opens as a
simple, attractive desktop client that uploads
files through a file tree, or by dragging and
dropping into the client. It monitors your
transfer history, and produces a tracking number
very similar to those used in physical package
delivery. To make sending faster, Memeo's client
integrates the Microsoft Outlook address book--in
addition to manual typing. It can't access any
company lists, though--just what you've added into
your Contacts silo.
The triple-paned app does a good job keeping
transfers transparent, and the online site is a
useful second gateway to accessing files and
records when you're away from the desk. Though
undeniably easy to execute, some conveniences
would make it better. Memeo Send should calculate
your file size and credit cost before a send, so
you can adjust your haul as needed. An abort
button on the main screen would help those of us
with trigger-fingers correct accidental sends
before they upload. We'd also like a way to more
easily manage preferences, like the storage path
for incoming files. Perhaps a tad too basic at
times, Memeo Send nevertheless handily solves a
frequent workplace problem.
